Renovation Update - August 25 - Expect the Unexpected

There are a few things you can't control during a golf course renovation project. One is the weather, which has been perfect so far. Another is what you find underground.

During the shaping of a new fairway bunker on the right side of #9 fairway, a rock shelf was uncovered. Finding rock underground on The Hill isn't really a surprise. There are rock outcroppings all over the course that present challenges when mowing. Some of the topsoil is very shallow over these rocks and that presents problems keeping turf healthy during the hottest part of the season.

Here, we have an opportunity to remedy this problem during construction. Groundskeeper Bruce Caldwell is on the rock hammer, breaking up the shelf. If you've never operated this piece of machinery, it's kind of like riding a bull! Needless to say, you still feel it long after you've stepped off the machine.

Work continues across the course. Bunker shaping and prepping of fairways for seeding are the focus of activity right now.

It is critical during this construction phase to keep pedestrian traffic off the golf course. Please don't walk or ride bicycles on the property. For the safety of everyone and to protect our newly planted turf during and after construction, the property is CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC. Signs are posted on the perimeter reminding people that there is NO TRESPASSING during construction. Please use the walking trail around the perimeter. Once construction is complete, it will be necessary to remain closed to allow the new grass to establish itself. The course will re-open in the late spring/early summer. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we make improvements.
