Renovation Update - September 8 - Grassing

One of the major aspects of the renovation project is to re-grass and provide quality golf turf on the nine hole layout.

On Labor day, the first seed went into the ground. A blend of bentgrass was put down of fairways 1, 2, 4, 5 and 8. By Wednesday, there was actually grass starting to sprout. That's very quick for bentgrass, but the weather conditions have been just about perfect for germination - sunny and warm during the day and cool at night. Add in a soaking rain event on Wednesday and you have the perfect recipe for growing grass.

The fairways will be seeded with a bentgrass blend called Center Cut. It has been highly rated for the climate in southwest Virginia and has done well at other golf courses. The greens will be seeded with 007 bentgrass. Both grasses are disease tolerant. The tee boxes, green surrounds and bunker surrounds will all be sodded with Zeon Zoysia, a slower growing and hearty grass that can stand up to the traffic that tee boxes experience. The tee surrounds will also be sodded but with a fescue/bluegrass blend.

On the left, you can see where the grass on the upper part of the 8th fairway is just starting to appear.

It remains CRITICAL during this phase to keep pedestrian traffic off the golf course. Please don't walk or ride bicycles on the property. For the safety of everyone and to protect our newly planted turf during and after construction, the property is CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC. Signs are posted on the perimeter reminding people that there is NO TRESPASSING during construction. Please use the walking trail around the perimeter. Once construction is complete, it will be necessary to remain closed to allow the new grass to establish itself. The course will re-open in the late spring/early summer. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we make improvements.

Please, follow our progress on Facebook and Twitter. We are constantly adding construction photos to our Facebook page in the "2017 Renovation" album.
